One Woman’s Trash

Might very well become my treasure. I found these glowing-orange-pink plastic rods wrapped in tape on the street in Manhattan. Irresistible. They’re around six feet long and weigh a ton. Yesterday, I figured out how to display the bundle on my studio wall and noticed that the tips conducted light. I thought something interesting might happen if they were scanned, so snapped one apart, set it on the glass, and let the light flow.

Juiced Orange: The Death and Rebirth of Vinyl

In May 2001, the Arty Party Salon at 8th Avenue Sessions, Times Square, rocked live music, performance, and visual art, curated by Tom Burnett and hosted by Matthew Courtney. And I had an entire room for the “Death & Rebirth of Vinyl” installation.RCA Victor Red Seal Record, scanned in 2011, CatRutgers4artOrange Zero Twelve © Catherine Rutgers 2017

Painted the walls with blue and white clouds, added black light, a vintage Hendrix poster, paintings, CDs, a red-vinyl RCA Victor 45 (recorded December 18, 1912, and made in Camden, New Jersey) and four mixed-media sculptures on LPs. Scanned on February 26, 2011, “Orange Ya’ Glad” becomes a whole new world in another dimension.

Containing Fire

Blue Light: 0603 © Catherine RutgersIt’s a very simple series, really: a row of burning candles, fifty-eight snapshots, some
taken with flash, some without. The wall was being scraped for painting.

The first five images rest well within “Snapped” guidelines, showing pretty much what
I saw in the viewfinder. Assign a web-friendly profile, adjust size, boost or dip brightness or contrast just the tiniest bit – and number two is tipped on its side. Six, seven, and eight journey into “Revelations” of invert, hue, and saturation. It was irresistible.

On Valentines

Painted Heart © Catherine Rutgers 2011

There’s something I can’t resist about a holiday that runs right up to the edge of ridiculously marketable, then teeters giddily, often unexpectedly, into our best and deepest impulse. And just as there are so many kinds of love, there are so many ways to illustrate them, so many feelings to wander through and marvel at. Start with the hearts and on to the roses, in honor of all the love in our lives, and the romance, too: Happy Valentines! Today and every day.

Guest Spot: Tom Burnett

Shenandoah Sunset © Tom Burnett

The original sunset, by Tom Burnett.

Tom’s current screen saver displays every single one of his pictures. The images shown here made me think, “Wish I could post them on CatRutgers4art.” Fact is, of course I can! And Guest Spot was born.

Guest Spot will be a monthly-or-so feature, expanding the dialogue on art and artists. By the way, did you catch the anagram? Spot. Post. I love words (and am betting you do too).

Here’s the good word from Mr. Burnett: “The original photo was taken at sunset, overlooking the Shenandoah Valley. I imagined that different life forms may perceive light waves differently than we do and sought to simulate those portals of perception, thus exploring the many possibilities of how a sunset is actually experienced depending on who or what is perceiving it. It’s also fun just to mess around with Photoshop and find a happy place to stop.” Enjoy the view.
